Data Protection Essentials for the Third Sector

Date: Monday, 26 June 2017

Time: 9.30am to 4.30pm

Location: Inverness

Cost: £150 per person (includes lunch and an “Introduction to Data Protection for the Third Sector” guide and slide presentation in electronic format)

Overview

Data Protection receives increasing media coverage and not a week goes by without a high profile breach incident hitting the headlines.

But Data Protection compliance isn’t just important for multinational companies.  It is just as important for third sector organisations, irrespective of how small or large they are.  Third sector organisations engage with a diverse range of individuals, from employees through to volunteers and service users, and hold a broad range of sensitive personal data, often concerning children and vulnerable adults.  Taking steps towards compliance now can go some way towards avoiding costly damage to reputation later or possibly even a six figure fine.

Daradjeet Jagpal, Legal Consultant and Director of Information Law Solutions, an independent legal consultancy specialising in delivering advisory, audit and training services to the third sector in Data Protection, Access to Information and Direct Marketing laws, will take you through the key Data Protection issues faced by third sector organisations today and outline the practical and cost effective steps that you can take to help your organisation comply with the law.

This interactive event includes an overview of the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and will equip you with the essential knowledge and toolkit to manage your organisation’s compliance risk and meet DPA requirements when:

  • collecting personal data;

  • capturing valid consent, including parental consent;

  • fundraising and promoting your charitable cause;

  • organising and managing events;

  • handling children’s personal data;

  • engaging effectively with employees and volunteers;

  • keeping your personal data secure;

  • using cloud services to store personal data, such as Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive;

  • capturing and sharing photographs and video images;

  • operating websites and social media channels; and

  • preparing for the future and the new EU General Data Protection Regulation.

The event will include case studies for discussion by participants, with useful practical tips and guidance to help avoid pitfalls.

No previous Data Protection knowledge is required and the event is suitable for anyone interested in Data Protection, regardless of their role, level of skill or experience.  Seasoned practitioners seeking a refresher or insight into Data Protection issues relevant to the third sector in Scotland will find value in the event.

The cost of the event includes tea and coffee on arrival and break times, networking lunch and a brief “Introduction to Data Protection for the Third Sector” guide and slide presentation in electronic format by follow-up e-mail after the event.

Participants will be issued with an electronic certificate confirming attendance at the event for their training records (6 hours' verifiable CPD).
